SFFANZ News Service
Just spreading the word... The Science Fiction and Fantasy Association of New Zealand (SFFANZ) has a news notification service. The service is designed as a notice board of all sorts of information relating to the local SF/F scene - book launches, competitions, conventions or just notification of cool stuff happening. Importantly, not only is it a place to read about what is going on, but it is also somewhere that you can publicise stuff for yourself. If you have an SF/F item to share or just something you have learned about, drop a line to press@sffanz.sf.org.nz to have it posted. You can find the home of this news service here. Right here on LJ, there is a feed at sffanz. There are also feeds to Facebook and Twitter. Spread the word. | 10:07 am [china_shop]

Greetings, In the run up to Au Contraire/Aussiecon 4, I am traipsing around New Zealand, heading from North Island to South Island and looping back up to Wellington. I would love to meet some Kiwi fans, especially artists. Please drop me a line if you would like to meet up. | | Monday, June 28th, 2010 | 3:01 pm [darthsappho]

Au Contraire room sharing?
Comment here if you're looking for someone to share a hotel room with at Au Contraire. Splitting the cost makes staying at the hotel twice as affordable, and it really does make for a more enjoyable con, even if you live in Wellington. Au Contraire car pooling?
So, is anyone planning to drive to Au Contraire (27-29 August)? Have space for a passenger or two in exchange for petrol money? Or anyone looking for a lift? Comment here! Current Mood: anticipatory | | Friday, April 30th, 2010 | 11:35 am [flickgc]

The Other Side Of The World
Hi all! I'm going to be coming to Au Contraire, en route from the UK to Aussiecon, and I had a couple of questions that I thought you might be able to answer: - PR2 says that there will be 'dance party' on the Friday night. What kind of dancing, to what kind of music, does that imply? Am I going to need a UK to NZ dictionary for the trip...? - Given that PR2 also says that there's to be a cocktail party on Sunday evening, does that mean that it's the Done Thing to dress for dinner the bar? Are we talking ball gowns, pretty frocks, corsets, all of the above...? - While I'm at it, PR2 also-also says that the masquerade is on Saturday 'after dinner': will that be a formal dinner, or does it just mean 'after the dinner break'? After the con, we've got a couple of days in the Wellington-ish area. I'd like to go riding: does anyone on here have any recommendations for stables in the area, other than what Google generates? Or indeed want to come with? What else should we be sure to do near Wellington? Ta! | | Monday, March 8th, 2010 | 10:14 am [rippatton]

Spec Fic Logo Contest I am currently running a logo contest for the writers association I’ve founded here in New Zealand. SpecFicNZ will finally launch in 2010 and we need a kick-ass logo to plaster on our website, print on our promotional material, and tattoo on the foreheads of all the Core members. If you are an artist, a wanna-be-artist, or simply a rad doodler, we would love to see your most creative logo ideas. Entries are free, easy, and you can make up to five of them. And the prize for the winner is pretty decent – $140 NZ, a free 6-issue subscription to Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine, and a copy of the book Newton’s Sleep from Random Static Publishing (and of course, the fame- never forget the fame). The Contest opens for entries March 15th, 2010, and closes April 15, 2010. You can find more information and complete contest rules here. | | Monday, September 21st, 2009 | 12:18 pm [ankhst]

Free Food and Batman - Wellington and Auckland Hi I am a Masters student at the University of Canterbury, working on a thesis on comic book readers, superheroes and masculinities. I’m looking for people who read superhero comics who would be willing to take part in a group interview about what they read, and what they do/don’t enjoy about superhero comics. Any readers from casual to hard core fans are ok, as long as they're over 18 (for legal, not dodgy reasons). I’m coming up to Wellington this week, and will run the group at 6 in the evening on Thursday (24 Sept). Location is central, I'll let you know the details if you're interested in being involved. I have 1 place left.
I'll be in Auckland after that, running a group on Sunday afternoon (27th). The exact time is still TBA, but I'm hoping for somewhere around 1-3, somewhere near the city (Ponsonby, New Market etc) - I'm hoping to be able to provide some transport if needed.
I can also arrange another group, or individual interviews if these don't suit.
There will be yummy nibbles provided for anyone who wants to take part (and I can cater to any weird allergies and dietary needs if I know about them in advance). I would really appreciate it if you could pass on my information to anyone else who you think may be interested in taking part in this focus group. My website, www.superhero.geek.nz, has more details about my research, including contact details for my supervisors and myself. Pimping Au Contraire
So how many of you are aware that the National Science Fiction Convention is going to be in Wellington next year? It's the weekend before the WorldCon, so why not start your holiday a few days early? Or it's a far more affordable alternative if you can't make it across the ditch. So why tell you now? The first progress report for the convention has just been released with lots of good stuff in it (ok, perhaps not as much as the WorldCon, but a couple of pretty nifty competitions). You can also get more info from the web site or the lj community. For further information, you could also come along to Conscription at QB weekend in Auckland. Most of the Au Contraire concom will be there and can answer your questions. 8) Current Mood: silly | | Friday, April 3rd, 2009 | 1:55 am [threemonkeys]

Pimping Aussiecon 4
So how many of you are aware that the World Science Fiction Convention is going to be in Melbourne next year? Yes, I know Melbourne is in Australia and this is an NZ group, but this is as close as the Worldcon ever gets to us, so we should be considering it a local event. Start planning now. So why tell you now? The first progress report for the convention has just been released with lots of good stuff in it. You can also get more info from the web site or the lj community. For further information, you could also come along to Conscription at QB weekend in Auckland. The Aussiecon 4 head of communications (Donna Hanson) will be there and can answer your questions. Or you can ask me. Because if you want to know my motivation in posting this, have a look at the staff list on page 2 and right near the bottom of the list you can find my name. | | Tuesday, August 26th, 2008 | 1:01 pm [darthsappho]

Nominations will close on or around 8 September, and ballots will be immediately distributed. Voting will run until shortly after Novacon. Please disseminate widely. -------------------- | | Saturday, March 15th, 2008 | 10:49 pm [darthsappho]

Conspiracy & Conjunction
That was a very well run con, with a excellent collection of guests. Congratulations to the concom! Possibly the program was a little bit _too_ full, but panel attendance is hardly compulsory. As usual, I should have been more organised beforehand; we had to go home early on Friday to finish our masquerade costumes. I thought the Mercure was a pretty good venue; the staff were unobstructive, a good range of con rooms, cheap accommodation, and plenty of food options within walking distance. The layout could have been better, but we've had worse. Any feedback on what should be done differently (or the same!) next year? If you're not currently intending to go to Conjunction next year, why not? Is there anything we could do to change your mind? Conclave
While not the best organised or well-attended convention ever, I had a really great time at Conclave. Thank you to the concom! The GoHs were a friendly bunch, the venue was reasonable aside from one overzealous partypooper on the staff, and the atmosphere was most pleasant. Also, the Joss Whedon Estrogen Brigade pwnxors! I would like to apologise once more for inflicting the Star Wars Holiday Special upon the congoers, even ameliorated by live action MSTing. And for my "singing" during the filking. Conjunction 2008 won the bid for 29th Natcon - thanks for your support 8) Now we just need to plan, promote, and run it... *whimper* Current Mood: happy |
